Rajkumar Hirani’s Pritam Pedro: Story Developer Amit Satyaveer Shares the Journey Behind the Writing

“The Biggest Challenge Was Balancing Cybercrime, Humour and Emotion”: Pritam Pedro Story Developer Amit Satyaveer

As Rajkumar Hirani’s much-loved OTT debut Pritam Pedro, featuring Arshad Warsi, Vir Hirani and Vikrant Massey, continues to receive praise on JioHotstar, story developer Amit Satyaveer has shared insights into the thought process that shaped the series.

Talking about the origins of the story, Amit revealed that the concept stemmed from an ethical hacker inspired by a book whose adaptation rights had already been secured. “The real challenge was developing a convincing equation between a hacker and a police officer. We introduced a conventional cop, someone who isn’t naturally tech-savvy, into a cyber cell. That clash of personalities became the foundation for much of the show’s humour,” he explained.

He further shared that the team was equally focused on giving the narrative an emotional core. “One of Rajkumar Hirani’s biggest strengths is his ability to make every character feel deeply human. We wanted Vikrant Massey’s character to come across as someone shaped by life’s circumstances rather than being perceived as just an antagonist. Blending comedy with emotional honesty made the storytelling feel much more authentic.”

Recalling one of the key creative breakthroughs, Amit said the team spent considerable time discussing the emotional payoff involving the grandfather’s tape before eventually arriving at the idea of the grandmother’s song. “The moment that idea emerged, the emotional journey felt complete and everything else started falling into place,” he said.

Having spent several years building stories in advertising, Amit described his move into long-form storytelling as a natural progression. According to him, both formats demand equal creativity. “Creating an impactful story in just 30 seconds can be as difficult as telling one across multiple episodes. The only difference is the duration. Personally, though, long-format storytelling excites me more because it gives you the space to truly explore characters, relationships and emotions.”

Speaking about coming on board Pritam Pedro, Amit said it was an opportunity he embraced without hesitation. “When Rajkumar Hirani is involved in a project, the decision becomes very easy. Opportunities to collaborate with someone like him are rare.”

Amit also believes his instinct for humour comes from his roots. “Growing up in North India, I was surrounded by people with an incredible sense of sarcasm, wit and observational humour. Those experiences have stayed with me and continue to influence the way I approach storytelling.”
